Securing Lives
According to the Brookings institute’s world poverty clock, 8,3 % (685 495 108) of the world population is living in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is defined as living on $1,90 a day. One of the united nations’ millennial development goals is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030.
Based on current projections by the Brookings Institute, the world will not end poverty by 2030.
According to a report issued by The World Bank, poverty was an estimated 62.6 percent in 2022 in South Africa based on the upper-middle-income country poverty line. This is based on an income of less than R945 per month. A main contributing factor is the high unemployment rate which stands at 32.9% (2023) and even higher (66,5) among the youth aged between 15 and 24. Other factors according to the report, are weak economic growth, lower commodity prices, higher consumer prices (especially for energy and food), lower investment levels, greater household dependency on credit, and policy uncertainty. These factors have resulted in more South Africans being pushed further into poverty.
Issachar Projects establishes food gardens in the townships of Cape Town.
We use food gardens as a tool to empower and educate members of the community to improve food security not only on an individual level, but also as a community.
VISION
Food Gardens
Our vision is to address the inequities that exist in society. One of the ways in which we do this is by improving food security for the most vulnerable and underprivileged in impoverished communities. In this way we are able to contribute to the alleviation of poverty.
Food gardens are able to meet some of the challenges brought about by the social ills prevalent in townships, such as poverty, unemployment, malnutrition and the associated health issues, by providing for

Vision for the future
We believe in
Harnessing the talents, gifts, skills, ambitions, hopes, dreams of individuals in the community to impact lives and develop thriving communities.
Instilling ownership and responsibility in individual lives so the whole community benefits and flourishes.
Building Communities That Thrive
Social ills in the townships as well as the lack of infrastructure that could lend itself to community development and safety, have resulted in the absence of spaces for children and youth to play, adults and the elderly to gather and interact in a secure environment.
We envision building communities that thrive by establishing activity centres and creating economic hubs in the townships

Establishing activity centres will serve as safe spaces within the community where various activities can take place.

Creating economic hubs for skills development and job creation will contribute to economic development
